Biography

Born in 1986, Maryam Abedi grew up in Tehran, Iran. After receiving her BFA from University of Tehran (2009), She moved to New York to continue her studies at New York Academy of Art (2012). She attended a residency at the Pilotenkueche International Art program in Leipzig Germany (2018). Recent exhibitions have included the 2015 Dead Palette, Iranian Artist Forum, 2016 piecing together and 2018 String Course, Iranshahr gallery, 2022 If Like the Lord I had Control Over the Firmament, Assar Gallery (Iran). In Maryam Abedi’s works, the painting support is no longer a trivial, unseen object, but is itself the subject matter of her paintings. Such a treatment occurs in a process of cutting her canvas into strips of different sizes and weaving them which follows a certain rhythm. In some of her works, this rhythm unfolds reminiscent of bricklaying, arches, ziggurats and stairs, and in others leads to abstract forms that can have different connotations. Mining a wide range of sources, from tradition of carpet making to Persian-Islamic geometric pattern and Architecture, Maryam has crafted a unique visual vocabulary remarkable for its meditative quality and spiritual energy. Maryam now lives and works in Tehran, Iran where the people and place of her home are the foundation of her work.
