In Maryam Abedi’s works, the painting support is no longer a trivial, unseen object, but is itself the subject matter of her paintings. Such a treatment occurs in a process of cutting her canvas into strips of different sizes and weaving them which follows a certain rhythm. In some of her works, this rhythm unfolds reminiscent of bricklaying, arches, ziggurats and stairs, and in others leads to abstract forms that can have different connotations. Mining a wide range of sources, from tradition of carpet making to Persian-Islamic geometric pattern and Architecture, Maryam has crafted a unique visual vocabulary remarkable for its meditative quality and spiritual energy.
Maryam now lives and works in Tehran, Iran where the people and place of her home are the foundation of her work.
