Born in Tehran and educated at the Pratt Institute in New York, Hadieh Shafie makes unthinkably intricate works—both on paper and of paper. Her tessellating pen-and-ink drawings, with their calligraphic lines and delicate colors, are just as staggering as the sculptures she constructs out of thousands of rolled, hand-dyed strips of paper. Shafie’s brightly colored paper art evokes both ancient handcrafts and modern pixelation. Though her works are densely textured and difficult to visually disassemble, she says that her influences include movements like Color Field Painting and Abstract Expressionism.
