Kashan city has seen its revival in the past ten years. The city that just like Pheonix is rising from its own ashes. Up until a decade ago the old buildings of the city were in decline if not in total ruins. Through efforts of a handful of notable people the city has been transformed; using local knowledge and craftsmanship of the artisans a good number of these old buildings have been restored to their former glory. This conversion is manifested in many ways in the ordinary life of the people of the city and has had tremendous effect on their lives.
This film captures candid moments with some of these movers and shakers, and is a testament to centuries of efforts by many people of this land to preserve and honor their heritage.
Abolfazl Shahi is from Kashan and based there. His work incorporates age old techniques such as carpet weaving. This installation titled “Kashan, Inside, Artist”, aims to exhibit different aspects of his practice, which is mostly Text based. His amazing photographs of Tombs of Martyrs of Kashan next to the dreamlike beauty of photographs of paintings in the old houses, is a deliberate choice to show the many layers of this enigmatic city.
