Birth completes a circle that began with Rest in Peace (2023) and continued through Eternal Rest (2025), Celestial Eye (2025) and Tales from the Garden (2026). Across these exhibitions, Mamali Shafahi & Domenico Gutknecht have traced a journey through absence, passage and imagined afterlives. Birth returns this journey to its point of origin: a beginning. Rather than separating arrival and departure, Birth considers them as part of the same continuous movement. What disappears may return in another form; every ending carries within it the possibility of emergence. Here, birth is understood not only as an arrival into life, but as a state of transformation. It is the moment when something takes form, crosses a threshold and enters the world. The exhibition looks at this moment as something that can occur again and again: through change, memory and the traces we carry from one state into the next. A beginning is never entirely new; it contains something of what came before. Red becomes the visual and conceptual ground of the exhibition. Extending from the works to curtains, windows and floor, it transforms the gallery into an immersive, almost bodily interior. Red evokes blood and flesh, warmth and desire, but also rupture and transformation. It belongs to both arrival and departure. Emerging between folds of red fabric, the works inhabit a space somewhere between a room, a stage and a body. With Birth, the circle closes without reaching a definitive end. What began as a meditation on disappearance returns as an act of becoming.
