The arriere-garde (rear guard) are those who like things in decline, those who find beauty in destruction. An arriere-garde cannot understand the present, and considers himself a part of a utopic past, he is nostalgic and lives within nostalgia. And this crisis is the result of an incongruity between the present and an ideal situation. Nostalgia is placeless and timeless, it is where one can spend an eternity, without fear of death, it is an ideal, Nostalgia's only shortcoming in the arts is when delusion takes the place of imagination. I try to envision the delusions of nostalgia as a form of abstaction.
