The people who sit across from me begin with their faces; I try. But ultimately, I impose my own portrait on their fac- es. I believe the entire history of portraiture hinges on this tiny yet profound secret: that every painter will ultimately resemble a portraitist if they endure. However, I have other secrets I havent been keen on sharing; I actually bury my secrets within the paintings. Some of the people I>ve painted, I know very well; some I think I know, and some I haven>t known at all and still don>t. However, my unrecognized self-portraits have been the most mysterious ones, like Pandora's box, a small container that releases monsters upon opening.
