1 Am My Own, As I Am...
In an age when the media and collective expectations constantly place before our eyes an image of "what we ought to be," distancing oneself from these borrowed images and returning to one's authentic self has become one of the most difficult, yet vital, acts of the human being today.
I Am My Own, As I Am... is an attempt to create such a distance: a space in which the artist, rather than reproducing the image expected of them, turns to narrating what they truly are.
The works presented in this collection have emerged from this very effort: self-portraits in which the artist has chosen not an external subject, but the self as the primary material of the narrative.
In this sense, the self-portrait is a dual act: seeing and being seen at once. In this process, the artist is compelled to bring the hidden layers of the unconscious into a visible and tangible form. This emergence gives rise to an image that goes beyond the reflection of the face and reveals the tension between the "real self" and the "represented self" — the very struggle known in psychotherapy as the distance between the ideal self and the real self.
Every image in this collection is an attempt to engage with this inner struggle. Faced with these works, the viewer encounters not a fixed and definitive face, but a process of exploration, doubt, and the redefinition of identity —a process in which the boundary between disclosure and concealment, between sincerity and aesthetic play, is constantly shifting. It is for this reason that the self-portrait cannot be regarded merely as an artistic genre; rather, it is a form of self-exploration that naturally leads into the realm of psychological understanding of identity.
This exhibition, beyond being a gathering of works, creates a space for an honest conversation about identity, self-acceptance, and what might be called authentic self-confidence, in contrast to self-confidence based on the approval of others. Each work asks the viewer to recognize in its mirror not only the artist's face, but also a fragment of a shared human experience-and perhaps a part of themselves.
" Am My Own, As I Am..." ultimately reminds us that identity is not something fixed and predetermined, but a process of becoming; and that beauty lies in accepting this very incompleteness and multiplicity.
